Université de Montréal and the students affected by the conflict in the Middle East

Montreal, August 3, 2006 – Concerned with the tragic situation of those caught in the conflict now rocking the Middle East, Université de Montréal has taken measures that reflect its longstanding collaboration with universities in that region. These measures are aimed at students who are already enrolled in a program at UdeM, students of Université libanaise and of Université Saint-Joseph with whom the university has partnership agreements, as well as others affected by the conflict.

“Every application will be considered individually, with the greatest possible attention to each person’s particular situation,” explained Martha Crago, Vice-Rector – Student Life.

In order to facilitate the process, the University has targeted three groups of students concerned by these measures:

Students of Université libanaise and Université Saint-Joseph
Since UdeM already has exchange agreements with the Université Libanaise and Université Saint-Joseph, UdeM will welcome a limited number of exchange students already enrolled in either of these universities for the fall semester 2006-2007. Students must demonstrate that they cannot pursue their studies due to the conflict, obtain their university’s consent, and remain enrolled at that university.

Students already enrolled in a program at UdeM
Students who have already been admitted to or are enrolled in a regular program for the fall 2006 term and who foresee that the events in the Middle East will prevent from attending university when classes start are asked to contact UdeM’s Admissions Department immediately.

Other people affected by the conflict
Université de Montréal will allow people affected by the conflict — whether they are currently in Canada or abroad — and who wish to study at UdeM, to make an application for admission to certain programs for the fall 2006 term, despite the fact that the deadline for admissions has already passed. In all cases, applicants must have the necessary authorizations, including a study permit. Université de Montréal is currently working with the governments in question to facilitate this exercise.

Psychologists are also available to provide psychological support to students enrolled in the UdeM who have been affected by the events in the Middle East.

Interested persons should contact the Admissions Department immediately. For more information: call 514-343-6111 ext. 1-1484.
