Université de Montréal educates Canada’s top doctors

For the seventh year in a row, UdeM graduating students score top marks on Medical Council of Canada examination

Montreal, October 31, 2006 – For the seventh consecutive year, students graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal have come first in the Medical Council of Canada examination. Graduating students from the 16 faculties of medicine across the country take the examination, which is required for the issuance of a license to practice medicine in Canada.

Dr. Raymond Lalande, Vice-Dean, Undergraduate Studies, believes that the results are a direct result of the effort expended. “Year after year, our graduates do us proud. Their performance confirms the wisdom of our approach to training doctors-to-be, the quality of our teaching staff, and the excellence of our practical training facilities.“

“What makes me happiest,“ adds Dr. Lalande, “is knowing that we are not only training doctors for our society who will form the next generation in our health-care system – but they’re also the best they can be.”

The results of the Medical Council of Canada examination, which were published this fall, show that students from the Université de Montréal earned the top marks overall and also came first in most of the disciplines that were evaluated. UdeM students have achieved the same excellent results since 1999.

The Medical Council of Canada is responsible for evaluating physicians in Canada and maintains an up-to-date registry of physicians and their qualifications.

There are more than 4,300 students in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal, including more than 2,000 enrolled in medical courses (preparatory year, medicine and residency). The Faculty, the largest in Canada and the fourth largest in North America, offers medical training in Montreal and in the Mauricie region. The Faculty relies on a huge network of hospitals and health-care institutions, with more than 2,000 professors and researchers throughout the network providing top-notch practical and clinical education.
