Chancellor’s role

The chancellor chairs the meetings of the university’s board, which exercises the rights and powers necessary for the administration and development of the institution.

 

Biography

Louis Roquet has been a member of the board of the Université de Montréal since 2016. He was appointed vice-chairman of the board in 2017 and installed as chancellor and chairman of the board on June 1, 2018.

Roquet holds a bachelor of arts degree from the Université de Montréal, followed by an MBA in Finance and International Administration from HEC Montréal and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Harvard University.

After serving as associate professor at HEC Montréal, he left academia in 1977 to work as a consultant in the area of business strategy, which led him to stay in many countries.

In 1986, he returned to Quebec and began a long career as senior manager in the public and private sectors. He was subsequently vice-president of administration at Steinberg (1986-1990), general manager of the Communauté urbaine de Montréal (1990-1994), secretary general of Ville de Montréal (1994-1995), president and chief executive officer of Investissement Québec (1995-2002), which he founded, president and chief executive officer of the Société des alcools du Québec (2002-2004), president and chief operating officer of Desjardins Venture Capital (2004-2009), and for a second time, general manager of Ville de Montréal (2010-2012). In 2012, he was given a two-year term as chief executive officer of Cevital SPA, the largest private company in Algeria.

During his career, Roquest has served on numerous boards, including the Société de développement Angus (1995-2009), which he founded and chaired. He currently heads the board of directors of Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal and is a member of the boards of the Centraide of Greater Montreal Foundation, Birks Group, and the engineering firm EXP.

Louis Roquet is married and has three children. He speaks French, English, Italian, German, and Hebrew, and is learning Spanish.
