Indigenous Leadership Program
The Indigenous Leadership program is offered by the University of Montreal in collaboration with Vancouver Island University and funded by the McConnell Foundation. The program creates a bridge between Indigenous graduates seeking employment and employers who receive support in cultural safety. It is open to all Indigenous individuals who have completed postsecondary education in the province of Quebec.
Through this two-year program, graduates gain professional experience through paid employment. Both participants and their employers receive comprehensive support throughout the duration of the program.
Program Objectives
The primary goal of the program is to break down employment barriers for Indigenous graduates and enable them to work in culturally safe environments where they feel comfortable and supported. The program seeks to increase Indigenous representation in the workforce across the province and within communities. It provides graduates with valuable work experience while offering both parties opportunities to expand their knowledge and professional networks.
Selection Process
To participate in the program, participants must be Indigenous, reside in Quebec, and have a Social Security Number. Candidates are required to complete a registration form and submit their CV. Spontaneous applications are also welcomed.
Support and Cultural Safety
Following the receipt of applications, individual meetings are scheduled with each candidate. These meetings provide an opportunity to better understand the applicant, assess their needs, and discuss their career expectations. Potential employers may also be discussed during these conversations. The program coordinator then makes recommendations and establishes first contact with prospective employers, who receive guidance on cultural safety practices. Regular follow-ups are conducted with both graduates and employers, both separately and together. Additional documents such as academic transcripts, motivation letters, and references may be requested during the process.
Graduates receive ongoing support through regular check-ins with the program coordinator and have privileged access to workplace mentorship. The program will eventually organize networking events and gatherings for participants.
